30 Animals That Share Our World collated by InkThinkTank

Chock-full of fascinating facts, 30 Animals That Share Our World takes a look at a variety of animals in the world around us such as spiders, horses, cats, and more. Each essay is written by a different author, providing a host of different ‘voices’ to engage young readers. My cubs and I loved this book! It got them interested in learning more in-depth info about certain animals. There was plenty to interest and educate older readers as well.

The Night the Forest Came to Town by Charles Ghigna

Ghigna’s The Night the Forest Came to Town is a children’s tale in verse about one magical evening when a spring wind blew seeds down into a grey town. Over the course of the night, rain showers set the plants to flourishing, and animals arrive, to build nests and dams. Come morning, the town is no longer grey, but a riot of colour and greenery.

I read this with my cubs, and they loved it. I myself enjoyed the poetry, though the whimsy of the tale was somewhat lost by my own understanding as an archaeologist, of how nature actually reclaims towns, in that they are usually abandoned… Otherwise, this story had a somewhat sinister note for me. A horror story akin to The Happening. Just me, I know. And I know the point of the story is we shouldn’t try to eradicate nature from our cities. That life will always find a way. The children in the story seemed happier with the flourishing nature, and to notice it more. There’s one adult dude always on his phone. But come morning, the adults can’t help but notice.

Around the World Word Search Puzzles by Victoria Fremont, Brenda Flores, Peter Lewis, Ilene J. Rattiner

Around the World Word Search Puzzles contains 100 word puzzle focused in a variety of countries, and international cities. Instead of just a word to find, you are given information about that word, be it person, place or thing. There’s lots here to keep one occupied. Unfortunately, I had a Netgalley digital review copy, so it was hard to circle words. I’d love to snag a hardcopy of this since I love word puzzles!

Under Dogs by Andrius Burba

Under Dogs by Andrius Burba is an absolutely adorable collection of pooches photographed from beneath a glass plate. Many different breeds are represented. There were even a few mutts! I found it amusing that only the two mutts had full open mouths. I may be wrong, but I’m guessing that the breeds are show dogs. Many, though not all, had a sort of ‘show dog’ stance. They looked all prim and proper, haha. Each dog gives the breed, and the doggo is on the opposite page. I loved the ones who were just all floof, with little paw pads. This is the perfect gift for dog lovers, and would make a lovely coffee table book.
