Woolly and Me by Quentin Greban
A cute and quirky tale with delightful illustrations about a young girl’s adventures with her pet mammoth, Woolly. They go everywhere together- grocery shopping, playing, painting, ballet, biking. If Wooly gets scared of the dark, or riding roller coasters, she comforts him, and if he gets hurt, she bandages his boo-boos, making sure to ‘call’ the doctor for advice. This was a beautiful story about the power of imagination. My younger cubs quite enjoyed it.
A great book for bedtime reading!

The Anger Volcano by Amanda Greenslade
The Anger Volcano is a book for younger kids that using rhyming language to teach about the dangers of losing your temper and ‘exploding’, how to recognise when anger begins boiling, and how to cool it down again by engaging the ‘thinking brain’ with tasks like counting backward, spelling a complicated word, and taking several deep slow breaths. The volcano analogy is perfect. I like that the end suggests practising the techniques when calm, to get the feel, and gain familiarity. The only downside is that it’s in black & white rather than colour illustrations. My cubs loved it though!
A great asset to helping younger kids learn to deal with anger.

The Tooth That’s on the Loose by Chris Robertson
The Tooth That’s on the Loose is a somewhat comical, goofy story about TB Wiggly, a tooth on the loose, wanted by the authorities. Sheriff Tex tells the reader all about Wiggly, and what to do if they catch him. Turning him over to the authorities brings a reward!
The illustrations were cute. Paired with short, simple sentences, this western tale turns a childhood inevitability into an adventure. My cubs enjoyed the reading, though it applied to none of us anymore. Still, it’s a great teaching tool, perfect for home reading, or part of a classroom.

The Eagle: Animals in the Wild by Renne
The Eagle: Animals in the Wild is a short, cute book to introduce kids to one of the most majestic of the great raptors- the eagle. Full of beautiful illustrations and easy to read language, it covers general aspects of life such as diet, territory, courtship, and nesting. At the end are sections listing other raptors of note, interesting facts, and important vocabulary. My cubs enjoyed this book. My only qualm is the generic name ‘eagle’ is used, when the raptor depicted in the book is specifically the golden eagle. I’m really not sure why that bothers me so, but it does…
A great book for teaching about golden eagles, and perfect for the child interested in nature and wildlife.
