Paper Fury’s For Writers: Beautiful People #27

This is my first time participating in the Beautiful People For Writers meme hosted by Cait@PaperFury and Sky@FurtherUpandFurtherIn. I had lots of fun doing it. I chose to focus on Ari/Arius from my current WIP, Evalyce: The Language of the Trees. For any interested, the first chapter can be read here. Constructive feedback is always welcome. Below are pics of Ari/Arius and his alter form inspired by the machaktiko, which are long teeth with shaggy manes and a hooked bone spike hidden in the tail tuft that can serve as a weapon. Like a scorpion sting, though the machaktiko carry no poison.

Master Arius

Ari ‘Arius’ Jeffersson

What are they addicted to/can’t live without?

Books, knowledge, learning.

His magick

As Arius, he’d add Maia to this list.

Name 3 positive and 3 negative qualities about your character.

Positive

*Fiercely protective

*Loyal

*Charming

Negative

*Mercurial temperament

This is common to all Technomancers, being part and parcel of being to technomancy. Prone to becoming broody for no discernible reason. In Ari, manifests as an aggressive temper at times.

*Reckless streak

*Stubborn/headstrong

Are they holding onto something they should get rid of?

Despite the necessity of getting prisoners captured to be sold as slaves free from a compound, Ari feels guilt over leaving behind the Jerachi mercenaries his covy was working with, even though the Jerachi urged him to do so. They stayed so the rest could get away. Ari was the covy leader.

One of the freed prisoners was a young Jerachi woman who was daughter to Jackie McCrarie, the leader of the Jerachi contingent. Ari returned her to Jericho. He checked in on her time to time. Unfortunately, the young woman killed herself not long after his last visit, unable to deal with the loss of her father, and with what had been done to her as a captive. So, there’s guilt for that too.

After her death, Ari resigned his commission and retired to Tribeca, living as a recluse in the neighboring forest, keeping his identity as a Technomancer secret. At least, until Mai came along.

If 10 is completely organized and 1 is completely messy, where do they fall on the scale?

Ari isn’t hyper neat. Probably an 8. His home has cluttered niches, where projects are in various stages of completion. His sleeping, and communal quarters are neat and tidy though.

What most frustrates them about the world they live in?

Well, this ties to what Ari resents, answered below. It frustrates him that a slave trade exists anywhere in the world.

How would they dress for a night out? How would they dress for a night in?

For a night out in the village of Tribeca, Ari would wear the same thing he’d wear at home. A comfortable tunic and trousers in some shade of grey. In Libernaath, as Arius, anything involving fancy dress would necessitate the formal Technomancer robes.

How many shoes do they own, and what kind?

Ari owns three pair of comfortable travel shoes of dark grey and black, and the shiny black dress boots that go with his formal Technomancer robes.

Do they have any pets? What pet do they WISH they had?

I wouldn’t say Merc is a pet, though he’ll pretend at times. Merc is a soot eagle that has adopted Ari. When Ari rejoins the Fleet, and leaves Tribeca, Merc goes with him.

Soot eagles are beautiful grey-feathered raptors with a black band across the tail. Beak and claws are suffused with mage metal making them extra sharp. Besides soot eagles, there are only 3 other known animal species and 3 plant ones that ingest and naturally utilise the unique mages metals. Armour snakes, a food of the soot eagles, is another such species. The skins of these large dangerous serpents are used to make the supple, protective vests the Praetorian Guard wear.

Is there something or someone that they resent? Why and what happened?

Ari resents the slave trade prevalent throughout the continent of Inkanata. He resents the mentality that thinks it ok, and some part of him resents that Argoth will not use the Technomancers’ strength to put an end to it.

What’s usually in their fridge or pantry?

Ari loves to cook. He often has specialised ingredients in the fridge.

  1. Wow, the Technomancers sound like interesting people! It seems like you have put a lot of thought into Ari, which is awesome. I love characters who are well developed. I think it is great that Ari loves to cook. I don’t read enough books with good food in them.
I did Beautiful People this month too! You can check out my post on my blog.
Great post, and good luck on this story!
