What I’m Currently Reading

Finally got to reading this! It’s so good. Wish I could draw it out and make the story last longer.

I love Kipling’s Jungle Book and Just So Stories, so I couldn’t resist this graphic novel. Pretty good so far!

Heavily influenced by his childhood in British-ruled India, Kipling created some of the most well-read children’s stories in Western Culture. Book One of The Jungle Book(s) includes Mowgli’s Brothers, the story of Mowgli, the abandoned man-cub who was raised by animals in the Indian jungle, Rikki-Tikki-Tavi the heroic mongoose, and Toomai of the Elephants, the tale of a young elephant-handler, and in The White Seal, we meet Kotick, a rare white-furred northern fur seal as he searches for a home where his family will not be hunted by humans. Originally published as a series of short stories for magazines in the late 1800s, the Nobel Prize-winning Rudyard Kipling would eventually publish the classic The Jungle Book in 1894.’

 

What I Recently Finshed

This was a good read, pretty quick for me. The description makes me feel I missed something though. This was more a character sketch, a ‘day in the life of’ sort of story.

‘In a thirsty, drought-stricken Australia, the country is well and truly sunburnt. As the Eastern states are evacuated to more appealing climates, a stubborn few resist the forced removal. They hide out in small country towns – where no one would ever bother looking.

Bill Cook and Tobe Cousins are united in their disregard of the law. Aussie larrikins, they pass their hot, monotonous existence drinking at the barely standing pub.

When strange lights appear across the Western sky, it seems that those embittered by the drought are seeking revenge. And Bill and Tobe are in their path. In the heat of the moment secrets will be revealed, and survival can’t be guaranteed.’

 

This book tore me up. It highlit the terrifying reality of human trafficking, and just how callously brutal people can be at times. I liked that the two main leads were females, who relied on themselves to solve their problems. I look forward to reading the other books in the series.

What I Plan to Read Next

I received this as an ARC, and it will be my first foray into Hunter’s works. I have a few Jane Yellowrock novels, and they look really good, but my TBR mountain is high and grows higher every day!

How sad am I? I have never actually read Dumas’ Monte Cristo. This manga will be my first introduction to this literary classic. I may give the original a go soon, too.
