Little People, Big Dreams Redux

Harriet Tubman by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara

Vegara’s Harriet Tubman takes a look at one of the Civil War era’s greatest heroines. Born into a life of slavery, Tubman grew up into a hardened, determined woman. Escaping to freedom along a network known as the Underground Railroad, Tubman made it her mission to free as many slaves as she could. It was a dangerous job, and she went back into the jaws of the lion many times, bringing others to freedom. The end of the book contains a more detailed look at Tubman’s life, using language suited for much older readers. Perfect for libraries, and classroom learning. I read this with my cubs. We love this series! Highly recommended!

Martin Luther King Jr by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara

This entry into the charming Little People, BIG DREAMS series takes a look the life of Martin Luther King Jr. At a young age, King quickly learned there were differences in the world. He was not allowed in his friend’s home because of the colour of his skin. They had different buses, and went to different schools. Martin took note, and polished his speaking skills. He became a Reverend, and spoke often to his congregation about equality, and making a stand for what’s right. When Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat in a bus to a white passenger and was arrested for it, King rallied the citizens, successfully carrying out a strike against bus riding until the laws were changed. This was a spark to the major civil rights movement leading to King’s famous ‘I have a dream’ speech. Above all, King supported non-violent protests, inspired by Mahatma Gandhi, to get the message across. The end of the book contains a more detailed look at King’s life, using language suited for much older readers. Inspirational and educational both, this entire series is great! I read this with my cubs. We love this series! Highly recommended!
