Kids Nonfic

One Day, So Many Ways by Laura Hall & Loris Lora

One Day, So Many Ways by Laura Hall & Loris Lora is a brilliant children’s book that looks at how kids do daily things the world over. From Australia to Tanzania, 40+ countries are looked at. Each activity covers a two-page spread that looks at about 10 different cultures. See what kinds of houses children around the world live in, the types of foods they eat for meals, the types of schools they attend, types of things they read, crafts they enjoy, and the things they do for weekend fun, among many other things. At end is section with information about the countries mentioned, giving the flag, name, dominant language, population and a few fun facts.

I found the US examples a little confusing at times. Some gave State name, US. Others gave a city name, US and others used city name, state name and no country. If you didn’t already know Alaska is part of the US, you would assume it the country name. Still, that aside, this is a wonderful book and a fun way to teach kids that not everyone does things the same way, and every way is valid. I’m a very big proponent of teaching cultural awareness, the earlier, the better, and will certainly be recommending this book for those with kids. My cubs enjoyed reading it as well, and it prompted lots of questions about the cultures described.

Simone de Beauvoir by Isabel Sanchez Vegara & Christine Roussey

Vegara’s Simone de Beauvoir is part of the young readers series Little People, Big Dreams. Each book in the series explores the early life of a famous figure, with a focus on what inspired them along their paths when they were children. Simone’s father sent both her and her sister to school so they could get an education and not need a man to take care of them. Simone went on to go to college, and become a philosopher and writer. Today, she is considered the mother of feminism.

At the back of the book is a section with photographs, and a more in-depth life history. Perfect for young readers interested in history and philosophy. Just one random thing- either Sartre had a lazy eye that moved from one eye to the other or he had a prosthetic eye that was never straight. In every picture, one of his eyes is looking toward the ceiling and the other not. Just sayin…

At the back of the book is a section with photographs, and a more in-depth life history. Perfect for young readers interested in history and nature.

I was lucky enough to meet Goodall at a wildlife conservation event.

Yellowstone National Park by Megan Cooley Peterson

Yellowstone National Park by Megan Cooley Peterson is, as the name suggests, all about Yellowstone, a US national park spanning parts of three states. Geared towards kids 6-8 years old, this field guide is packed with gorgeous pictures, and tons of information. New words are introduced, with definitions supplied. Not only that, but Peterson even lays out a hike to take when visiting Yellowstone. An overall great book for getting kids interested in nature. My cubs and I read it together, and we all enjoyed it! Now they want to go visit Yellowstone in person. Haha, maybe soon!
