Out of the Blue is the second of Oelschlager’s books that I’ve read recently. This one I also read with my cubs. This book looks at various colour themed idioms, pairing the phrase with a picture both literally and figuratively depicting the phrase.

‘Born with a silver spoon in one’s mouth’ is a picture of several babies in bassinets, with blankets and pacifiers. The baby with the silver spoon in place if a pacifier has a blanket with dollar signs on it. My little ones correctly sussed out the meaning of the phrase based on the picture.

The artwork in this charming little teaching book is absolutely adorable, and made learning fun for them. Some are more language-oriented, taking after me, but even the more science and math oriented had fun with this book. The big favourite was the ‘black sheep’. Heh, probably because that’s what I am to my blood-family, but I’ve striven to make sure my cubs know there’s nothing shameful in being different. I would highly recommend Out of the Blue by Vanita Oelschlager for any interested in learning the nuances of English, be they adult or child, or any looking to cultivate an appreciation for word-play and idiomatic language in younger audiences.
